Most B2B purchases involve several people. If you only know one contact, you do not know the deal. Mapping the buying committee early is the difference between a pipeline and a hope.
The typical roles
- Economic buyer — owns the budget and signs.
- Champion — wants the change and sells it internally.
- Technical evaluator — checks integration and security.
- End users — live with the tool daily.
- Blockers — procurement, legal, or a sceptical peer.
How many buyers are needed?
It scales with deal size and departments affected. A tool touching one team may need 2–3 people; one that needs IT integration across departments often needs 5 or more.
How to map it before the call
- Start from the departments your product impacts.
- Find the leader of each on LinkedIn and the company site.
- Note titles and reporting lines.
- Rank by influence and likely stance.
- Prepare a different angle for each role.
Multi-threading in outreach
Reach the champion first, but warm up the economic buyer with a role-specific message within the same week. If your contact leaves, you already have alternatives.
Do it automatically
Brief Source estimates how many buyers a deal needs, shows who has been identified (names with positions), and recommends 2–3 alternate contacts that match your ICP.
